Second CEARAC Expert Meeting on Eutrophication Assessment in the NOWPAP Region was organized on March 22, 2019 in Vladivostok in Russia. The meeting reviewed progress for on-going CEARAC activities on eutrophication assessment and discussed how to update and improve information in the map of potential eutrophic zones in the NOWPAP region, available at https://map.nowpap3.go.jp/maps/view. The meeting participants also discussed possible contribution from this group to an indicator development of Index of Coastal Eutrophication listed as a sub-indicator of Sustainable Development Goal 14.1.1.
CEARAC has been processing a regionally tuned remotely sensed chlorophyll-a concentration (satellite Chl-a) data in the Northwest Pacific region and regularly provide such data on the Marine Environment Watch System website. NOWPAP Eutrophication Assessment Tool (NEAT) was developed by CEARAC to identify potential eutrophic zones in the NOWPAP Region using level and trend of a time series of satellite Chl-a data. The NEAT enables visualization of potential eutrophic zones with single image condensing nearly two decades of time series satellite Chl-a data for assessment and management of marine eutrophication.
The meeting participants endorsed the effectiveness of the NEAT and encouraged CEARAC its further development with new ocean color satellite sensor data by inter calibration of sensors and cross validation with in situ chlorophyll-a concentration data.
